urban curtain hunt

The Urban Outfitters interiors selection has really been impressing me lately. A lot of their designs are beautiful and  modern and won't break the bank. I'm having a really hard time picking new curtains for my living room {currently I'm rocking some very boring/cheapo white Ikea ones} and am loving the idea of getting a fun pair from Urban. Curtains are a great way to express your style and mix up your space in an affordable way. I'm torn between the ruffle and chevron designs as most of my studio is white and rather plain. Once I decide I will post some photos and see what you think!

Urban's online apartment section also has great duvets, knobs, rugs and holiday gifts for the home.

5 reasons to love the pearl

photos by the pearl hotel

If you haven't had the chance to visit the Pearl Hotel this century, you are missing out. This mid-century throwback hotel's old-school California charm is infectious. The decor is beautiful and the energy makes you feel like you are at a fabulous Hollywood hotel in the 50's. Unique things are always going down at the hotel and if you are an out-of-towner it would surely be a fun place to stay.
5 reasons why we love it:
    1. The dive-in theater: New and old flicks are projected on a giant screen over their pool on Wednesday nights. You can wine & dine around or in the pool with friends while watching a movie. Good way to break up your weekdays. And it's free!
    2. Sunday Brunch: Their brunch menu is hearty and includes a bottomless mimosa option (obviously you know by now those get us every time). You can then lounge around their pool after eating and feel amazing in your bathing suit :)
    3. The beautiful decor and mid-century design (check out their bathroom!)
    4. Wallet-saver deals: Includes buy one get one free coupons, happy hours and free birthday meals.
    5. They have cabana areas for groups of 6 or more. One of my favorite birthday party locations.
If you know of any unique San Diego gems, feel free to email us as we would love to check them out and feature them on A Little Birdy Told Me.

    vintage gems

I found this really pretty 1970s Sara Moon 'Moshgan' signed painting today at Goodwill for $5 (including one ugly frame). After doing some research I found out it was one of her first pieces. I'd consider that a score! Just need to figure out how I want to frame it.

    fall style

I don't now about you, but living in the southwest, I really miss the transition between summer and fall this time of year. Growing up in the midwest, this was always such an exciting & transitional season. You get to buy new boots, jackets and sweaters, finally turn your ac off and cozy up. Here in San Diego, however, fall seems to bring with it some of the hottest months of the year. In most aspects the warm weather is a welcomed bonus, but in regards to clothes, I still want to slip into fall-festive threads.

Here are a few of my favorite Southern California-friendly & beyond fall finds.

    1. Cowel Neck Dress: Emily Ryan, Etsy 2. Red Skinny Jeans: J Brand, Anthropologie
    3. Leather Boots: Lucky Brand, Piperlime 4. Mustard Dress: H&M (in store)
    5. Cloud Blouse: Anthropologie

    a midwestern fall

So I seriously jumped the gun last week when I was bragging about how I packed everything into a carry-on. I froze the entire trip and should have packed a coat and more sweaters! Either I have forgotten how cold it gets back home in the fall or I have become a total weakling from living in southern California. Either way, the trip to Chicago and Minnesota was so much fun. I got to spend quality time with my mom, sisters and friends and finally see {and shop} Chicago as an adult. Here is a mix n' match summary of my trip in iPhone Instagram photos. Such a beautiful time of the year...

neighborhood picks: the rose wine pub in south park

photos via the rose wine pub

Talk about a little jewel, the Rose Pub Wine Bar in South Park is one of our favorite hideouts. From the moment you step foot in the historic building, you can't help but notice its unique charm. The decor is inviting and adorable- a mixture of rustic and romantic and the food and drink choices are quality. Erin recommends the Isabel Mondavi Chardonnay and their flat breads are always delish.

The pub's central location makes it convenient for us to meet up for a glass of wine and dinner when we get the chance. It's nestled right in between the new Stone Brewery store and one of our favorite little shops, Progress (which deserves a post of its own). Our favorite part about the place? Happy hour runs daily from 4:30-6. Cheers!

Fun Fact: Their wine storage is built out of reclaimed wood from a historic South Park home.

    find a reason to celebrate

Visiting Shop Sweet Lulu's online store always makes me want to pop a bottle of champagne...in my pajamas...on a Tuesday. I sadly have no parties planned, but you never know the the chance to celebrate will pop up right? Case in point, I just placed an order for my 'just in case' party. This place is no Party City- it's an online party decor store with the cutest party decor, including stripey straws {which I strongly believe everyone needs stocked in their kitchen-- along with a bottle of champagne}, cake stands, pom poms, humongous balloons and every other little detail to turn your regular old party into a celebration. Here Here...just because!

    Balloons, $5

    Cupcake Stand, $15

    Candles, $13.50

    Cake Stand $40

    Straws, $4 for 20

    is it friday yet?

This Friday I will be hopping a plane and flying to the fancy city of Chicago. My mom had an 'important' birthday this year and my sisters and I will be traveling from Maine, Iowa, California and Minnesota to the windy city for a little girls weekend in the city to celebrate. After that adventure I'll be heading back home to Minnesota for a very brief stay to see my family and friends. I've been looking online to see if I could find any new spots or ideas for my trip and instead looked at all these pretty pictures and art for the better part of an hour. Here are some pretty pretty pics of my two fabulous Midwestern cities. Happy birthday Mom!

make your own pumpkin spice latte

Did you hear about the pumpkin shortage this year? My sister called me this morning from Maine and told me the news and I immediately hopped in my car and practically cleared the grocery store's canned pumpkin supply. She apparently can't find any in Maine and I about panicked that the shortage may also hit CA. How would I survive?!

After unloading my grocery bag, a small amount of buyer's remorse set in about the ridiculous amount of canned pumpkin I now have. Time to get busy pumpkin-ing I decided.

This is roughly the same time I realized I didn't have time for my daily coffee in the midst the pumpkin mayhem morning. I have a love/hate relationship with Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte- my mouth loves it but my wallet does not. With the overwhelming amount of pumpkin on my shelf, I decided to make my own version. After a little thought and research, I present you with my delicious, homemade and much cheaper option to the habit that is Starbucks.

    Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe
    Makes two lattes

    Ingredients:
    • 1 cup strong brewed coffee
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1/4 cup canned real pumpkin
    • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice blend
    • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
    • 1 tsp cinnamon (half in mixture, half on top)
    • 2 tsp vanilla extract
    • 3 tbsp brown sugar
    • Whipped cream (you pick the amount!)

    Directions:
    1. Brew one cup of coffee.
    2. In a bowl, whisk together pumpkin, milk, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract and brown sugar.
    3. Add mixture to saucepan and heat on low for 5 minutes or until heated through.
    4. Add coffee and mix.
    5. Heat mixture until hot.
    6. Pour into your coffee cup and top with whipped cream and remaining cinnamon.
    7. Enjoy!

fall pumpkin soup, in a pumpkin.

So chipper that it's finally October. Fall has always been my favorite season and I really miss myself a Minnesota autumn (note: I didn't say winter).

Even though it still feels like summer in San Diego, I suddenly feel like I have an excuse to do 'fallish' things like wear sweaters and boots and eat pumpkin everything: pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cream cheese, pumpkin beer- you name it.

I was feeling extra domestic last weekend and created this simple pumpkin soup recipe and served it in, guess what, a pumpkin! Here is my recipe.

    Fall pumpkin soup recipe:
    serves 6

    Ingredients:
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 2 cans chicken broth (if you're a vegetarian you can of course swap for vegetable broth)
    • 2 1/2 cups canned real pumpkin
    • 2 cups sweet potatoes/yams, peeled and chopped
    • 1 cup milk
    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tsp pepper
    • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
    • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
    • 1/8 tsp curry powder
    • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

    Garnish
      • 1/2 cup sour cream
      • 3-4 pieces thick-cut bacon
      • 4 sprigs fresh parsley

      Directions:
      1. In a large saucepan, saute onion in butter until tender.
      2. Add the broth, potatoes and pumpkin, cook until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.
      3. Remove from the heat; cool.
      4. Puree the mixture (or half if you want a chunky soup) in a blender or food processor until smooth; return all to the pan.
      5. Add the milk and spices, heat through.
      6. Pour mixture into a bowl (or pumpkin bowl!) and garnish with a dollop of sour cream, a few pieces of bacon and a sprig of parsley.
      7. Enjoy!

      pumpkin bowl how-to

Say hello to your inner Martha with a festive pumpkin bowl. Really, who wouldn't want to eat out of a pumpkin? They make everything cuter.

I used one to serve my pumpkin soup recipe but they could be used for so many other purposes (think Thanksgiving serving bowls). It's seriously simple and adds that special something-something to all your favorite fall dishes.

      Pumpkin Bowl Recipe:
      1 bowl

      Ingredients:
      • 1 small pie pumpkin (you can use any size pumpkin depending on the size of your dish)
      • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
      • 1 tsp sea salt and pepper mixture
      • 2 tbsp water

      Directions:
      1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
      2. Rub pumpkin with olive oil and salt/pepper mixture.
      3. Even out bottom of pumpkin by cutting off any uneven edges to allow pumpkin to stand straight (see picture). Don't cut more than 1/2 inch or so to avoid puncturing.
      4. Place water at the bottom of shallow baking pan and insert pumpkin.
      5. Bake for 40-50 minutes.
      6. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes.
      7. Cut hole in top of pumpkin, large enough to serve as a bowl.
      8. Remove top, peel out inside with a spoon.
      9. If you puncture the bottom of the pumpkin while spooning out, don't fear, you can cover with tin foil to repair the hole.
      10. Spoon in the dish of your choice.
      11. Enjoy!

      sunday brunch pick: currant

Recently we had an amazing Sunday ladies brunch at Currant American Brassiere, nestled inside the Sofia Hotel on Broadway. It was our first time brunching at Currant, although we have been known to frequent the establishment for their happy hour (which I firmly believe is one of the best downtown). The food was tasty, we both tried their eggs benedict, but what really tickled our fancy was their $8 bottomless mimosas, yes please.
